U.S. Open Blow: Corey Conners Withdraws Before Final Round with Wrist Injury

Corey Conners Pulls Out of U.S. Open Final Round Due to Injury

Corey Conners had to withdraw from the U.S. Open before Sunday’s final round, citing a right wrist injury that he re-aggravated during Saturday’s third round.

Turns out, the wrist issue actually started earlier in the week. Conners first injured it back on Thursday during the first round while hitting a bunker shot. His caddie mentioned that the club hit a hidden TV camera cable in the sand. The real problem came on Saturday, though, when he re-aggravated it from a tough plugged lie in a greenside bunker on the 11th hole. He got some medical attention and kept going, but it clearly impacted his play.

He was set to tee off with Ryan Fox at 10:20 a.m. EDT on Sunday, but after trying a brief warm-up, the pain was just too much. Even with his wrist taped up, he simply couldn’t go on and had to pull out.

This withdrawal is a tough break for Conners, who’s been having a solid season. Before this week, he’d already racked up five top-10s and ten top-25s in 15 starts this year, including a T8 at the Masters. He was sitting comfortably at ninth in the FedEx Cup standings. He also has a good track record at the U.S. Open, finishing T9 last year at Pinehurst – his best result here. Looking ahead, he’s currently listed for the Travelers Championship next week, but understandably, his status for that event is now up in the air.
