Royal Oops! Ascot Blunder Puts Spotlight on Princess Beatrice

Royal Ascot’s Official Hiccup Involves Princess Beatrice’s Husband

Royal Ascot, the prestigious highlight of the British social and racing calendar, encountered a minor administrative oversight this year, specifically concerning the official documentation for the highly anticipated carriage procession. The slight error involved the name of Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, husband of Princess Beatrice.

Having attended the opening day of Royal Ascot on Tuesday, June 17, without participating in the traditional horse-drawn entrance, Princess Beatrice and Edoardo joined other senior members of the royal family, including her uncle King Charles, for the ceremonial procession two days later on Thursday, June 19.

However, when Ascot Racecourse publicly released the official list detailing the occupants of each carriage for Thursday’s event, an inaccuracy was noted. Sharing the third carriage with Princess Zahra Aga Khan and esteemed royal horse trainer William Haggas, Princess Beatrice’s name was correctly listed, but her husband was identified as “Mr. Eduardo Mapello Mozzi” – a misspelling of his first and last names.

Curiously, despite this error on the official list, photographs from the event show that the couple’s personal nametags correctly displayed Edoardo’s name.

**Despite the minor gaffe**, Princess Beatrice, 36, and Edoardo, 41, appeared entirely unfazed and seemed to thoroughly enjoy their day at the famous race meeting. They were pictured engaging in candid conversation while observing the races and even shared an affectionate moment, captured kissing for the cameras.

The outing marked another step in Princess Beatrice’s gradual re-engagement with public royal life following the birth of her daughter, Athena, on January 22.

Athena’s arrival came several weeks ahead of schedule, a challenging experience Princess Beatrice candidly shared in a personal essay for British Vogue published in March. She conveyed the “sheer worry” she felt surrounding her daughter’s premature birth, noting that while she and her family now possess “a few more answers as to what happened,” a precise medical explanation remains elusive. Nonetheless, the experience profoundly impacted her, teaching her “so much.”

Edoardo, often affectionately called “Edo” by the family, publicly lauded his wife’s courage in sharing their story. He posted a heartfelt tribute on Instagram, featuring an intimate mother-daughter photo from the Vogue interview, expressing “So much pride for my beautiful wife, who has bravely shared our story of Athena’s early arrival.”

Princess Beatrice and Edoardo are also parents to their elder daughter, Sienna, aged 3. Edoardo also has a son, Christopher Woolf, 9, from a previous relationship.

While Princess Beatrice and her younger sister, Princess Eugenie, maintain professional careers outside of full-time royal duties, Beatrice holds a significant constitutional role. She serves as a Counsellor of State to her uncle, King Charles. This position means she can act on the King’s behalf and execute certain constitutional functions if he is abroad or indisposed.

Their daughters, Athena and Sienna, do not currently hold royal titles within the British peerage. However, they possess Italian noble titles inherited through their father’s lineage. As the eldest son of Count Alessandro Mapelli Mozzi, Edoardo is the heir to his family’s historic 18th-century ancestral seat, the magnificent Villa Mapelli Mozzi palace located in northern Italy.

Thus, while a small error briefly appeared on an official document, it did little to detract from Princess Beatrice and Edoardo’s apparent enjoyment of Royal Ascot, highlighting their focus on family and their unique blend of royal and noble heritage.
