Donnie Wahlberg Opens a ‘New Chapter’ with Boston Blue Spinoff Table Read

Donnie Wahlberg Launches ‘New Chapter’ as Production Begins on Blue Bloods Spinoff, Boston Blue

Seven months following the conclusion of the beloved CBS police drama *Blue Bloods*, actor Donnie Wahlberg has officially started production on its upcoming spinoff series. The new show, titled **Boston Blue**, will see Wahlberg reprise his long-running role as NYPD Detective Danny Reagan, albeit in a brand new city and police department.

Wahlberg marked this significant milestone on July 8th, his first day on set for *Boston Blue*. Taking to Instagram Stories, the 55-year-old offered fans a glimpse behind the scenes, sharing a photograph from the inaugural table read. The image featured the pilot episode script positioned before a name tag clearly identifying his character as “Danny Reagan.”

“A new chapter 💙,” Wahlberg captioned the post, also tagging his soon-to-be co-star, Sonequa Martin-Green.

The pilot episode, marking the series’ debut, was penned by Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis and directed by Anthony Hemingway. Notably, these names represent fresh creative talent joining the established *Blue Bloods* narrative world.

**Boston Blue**, which received a direct-to-series order from CBS earlier this year in February, shifts Danny Reagan’s professional focus. After years on the streets of New York City, the seasoned detective will be taking a new position with the Boston Police Department.

Sonequa Martin-Green, known for her work in *The Walking Dead*, is set to portray Wahlberg’s partner in the series. According to the official logline, her character is a detective who is also the eldest daughter of a prominent law enforcement family.

As the creative team develops the new series, Wahlberg has consistently stressed a crucial priority: **keeping the spirit and legacy of the original *Blue Bloods* at the core of the story.** CBS has described *Boston Blue* as a “universe expansion,” and Wahlberg has been candid about the importance of maintaining the original show’s energy.

He shared his perspective in a recent interview, explaining the dynamic of the new setting: “It’s really fun letting Danny be a fish out of water, to be in this new world. **It’s also important to remember where he comes from and what the Blue Bloods legacy is**.” He affirmed that this balance is at the forefront of their minds as they build the series.

Adding to fan excitement, Wahlberg has also hinted at the potential for other familiar faces from the original *Blue Bloods* cast to make guest appearances in Boston. A key question on many viewers’ minds is whether Tom Selleck, who portrayed Danny’s father Frank Reagan for 14 seasons, might reprise his iconic role.

When asked about the possibility of Selleck appearing on *Boston Blue*, Wahlberg offered a playful tease, pointing out the geographical closeness between Danny’s former and current cities: “New York and Boston are really close.”

With the initial table read successfully completed, production on *Boston Blue* is now officially underway, promising viewers a fresh, yet connected, continuation of Danny Reagan’s story within the expanded *Blue Bloods* universe.
